All the pumps for pumping water in any of plumbing, HVAC and fire protection systems are centrifugal type. In fire protection system, the pumps are either with electric motor or diesel engine. In buildings with emergency power (generator) the fire pumps are with electric motor but in buildings which there will be no emergency system, the diesel engine fire pump need to be used.

It is mandatory to use U/L listed pumps having capacity to deliver 150% of capacity to the system. Not specifics that centrifugal pumps can be used. Even vertical turbine pump with submerged suction can be used as well. There should be 2 pumps. 1 to be treated as Main duty and other as a standby operting through DG or standby power system in case of power failure. it should be happen in automatic way.
