The maximum allowed water pressure from the street main pipe is determine by local codes. If the allowed pressure for water service cannot provide the required pressure for each plumbing fixture at the highest floor of building then the booster pump system is required for increasing pressure in piping system to overcome elevation and friction losses in order to meet the flow demand and required pressure for users in piping system.

Booster pump systems are variable volume but constant pressure, therefore a VFD is required on pumps motor to vary the flow based on the system needs.

The calculation procedure is similar to sizing pump for open circuits.

Pumps’ type:

  • End suction pumps
  • In-line pumps
  • Vertical multi-stage pumps
  • Vertical turbine pumps
  • Horizontal split case, double suction pumps
