Gas System Components:

  1. Gas meters:
    • Meters shall be located in ventilated areas.
    • Meters shall not be placed where they may be subject to damage.
    • Meters shall be located at least 3 feet from sources of ignition.
  2. Gas pressure regulators (where required):
    • A gas pressure regulator shall be installed where the gas supply pressure is higher than that at whichthe branch supply line or gas utilization equipment is designed to operate.
    • Regulators shall be provided with an independent vent to the outside of the building, sized in accordance with the regulator manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. Valves:
    • An accessible gas shutoff valve shall be installed upstream of each gas pressure regulator. Where two pressure regulators are installed in series in a single gas line, a manual valve shall not be required at the second regulator.
      • Shutoff valve shall be readily accessible for operation and installed so as to be protected from physical damage.
      • Where required, an exterior shutoff valve to permit turning off the gas supply to each building in an emergency shall be provided.
  4. Gas Boosters:
    • Gas boosters are used when there is insufficient pressure available from the gas utility or LPG storage device to supply the necessary pressure to the equipment.
  5. Piping:
    • Underground gas piping shall be installed with sufficient clearance from any other underground structure therewith.
    • Underground piping systems shall be installed with a minimum of 18 inches of cover.
    • Gas piping shall be protected against corrosion and freezing, where the formation of hydrates or ice may occur.
    • Where the installation of gas piping underground beneath buildings is unavoidable, the piping shall be encased in an approved conduit designed to withstand the superimposed loads. The conduits shall extend outside the building, be vented to outside above grade and shall be installed so as to prevent entrance of water and insects.

Piping Materials

  1. Metallic Pipe:
    • Steel and wrought-iron pipe at least standard weight Schedule 40, and shall conform with ANSI/ASME B36.10, ASTM A 53, and ASTM A 106.
    • Copper and brass pipe – shall not be used if the gas contains more than an average of 0.3 grains of hydrogen sulfide per 100 scf of gas.
    • Aluminum alloy pipe – except that use of alloy 5456 is prohibited. Pipe shall comply with ASTM B 241.
  2. Plastic Pipe:
    • Plastic pipe, tubing and fittings shall be used outside underground only and shall conform with ASTM D 2513.
