When building drains cannot be discharged to the street or site sewer by gravity flow, the waste should be drained to a pit (basin) and be pumped out to the main sewer line which drains by gravity flow. It is good practice to have two pumps in the system where one pump would be standby in case of the main pump failure.

A sewage ejector is a device used to pump sewage waste water from a point beneath the main sewer drain of a building into the sewer drain line.
